Journalist Chin’ono denied bail

Harare magistrate Ngoni Nduna on 24 July 2020 denied bail for journalist Hopewell Chin’ono who is facing charges of incitement to public violence and remanded him in custody to 7 August 2020.

Chin’ono is being charged in terms of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act which deals with incitement to participate in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breaches of peace or bigotry or alternatively incitement to commit public violence.

Earlier, his lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa, in her final submissions in the bail application, had argued that Hopewell is a good candidate for bail and that the State has a weak case against him. The State opposed the granting of bail.
