Journalist Mhlanga further remanded in custody

22 Apr, 2025

What happened

Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalist Blessed Mhlanga appeared in court on 22 April 2025 before Magistrate Ruth Moyo for routine remand and was further remanded in custody to 30 April 2025.

The state informed the court that it still needed to record one witness statement from the investigating officer, Inspector Chitambira, who is reportedly out of the country.

It is expected that when Mhlanga returns to court at the end of the month, a trial date will be set.

The state promised that investigations would be completed by April 30 and would not seek further remand.

Background

Mhlanga is facing two counts of contravening Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act which deals with transmitting data messages inciting violence or damage to property.

He has been in detention since 24 February 2025, when he was arrested.

Repeated efforts to get bail have so far been unsuccessful.
