Journalist Mhlanga charged with transmitting data messages inciting violence

24 Feb, 2025

What happened

Blessed Mhlanga journalist with Heart and Soul TV (HSTV) was on 24 February 2025 charged and detained on two counts of contravening Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act which deals with transmitting data message inciting violence or damage to property.

According to his lawyer, Chris Mhike, Mhlanga will appear in court tomorrow following the recording of his statements by the police Law and Order Section at Harare Central Police Station.

It is alleged that after interviewing war veteran Blessed Geza on 27 January 2025, and again on 11 February 2025, the journalist transmitted Geza’s messages which were inciting violence, through YouTube and HSTV, thereby breaking the law.

Mhike said Mhlanga will be detained overnight, pending his initial court appearance, which is scheduled for the morning of 25 February 2025.

“Mhlanga denies the allegation leveled against him and insists he is being harassed for executing his journalistic duties,” said Mhike.
