Journalist files report with police following assault

MISA Zimbabwe urges the police to thoroughly investigate this case to its final conclusion.

Meanwhile, Section 61 of the Constitution which provides for freedom of expression and freedom of the media, clearly highlights that every person is entitled to freedom of the media, which freedom includes protection of the confidentiality of journalists’ sources of information.

MISA Zimbabwe, therefore, calls on all stakeholders and members of the public to uphold the right of journalists to protect their sources as provided by the Constitution.

In that regard, there is also a need for the enactment of a law that protects whistleblowers to further strengthen the media’s watchdog role and citizens’ right to hold public officials accountable.

MISA Zimbabwe also urges members of the public aggrieved by stories published by the media to file their complaints with the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe. On the other hand, the media should at all times be guided by the codes and ethics of the profession in its reportage.
