Journalist attacked outside court

What happened
NewsDay journalist Rejoice Phiri was reportedly assaulted by fraud-accused Moses Mpofu’s sister-in-law outside the Harare Magistrates Court on 1 July 2024.
According to NewZimbabwe.com Phiri was attacked while filming a conversation between socialite Passion Java and the accused. In a fit of rage, she also reportedly grabbed NewZimbabwe.com’s equipment outside the court while hurling insults against the journalists.
MISA's position
MISA Zimbabwe condemns any form of media freedom violations, including assault, threats and intimidation against journalists conducting their lawful professional duties.
Journalists have a constitutional mandate to seek, receive and impart information without any hindrance. In that regard, every person ( including the State and its agencies), has a duty to respect, protect and promote the rights of journalists as provided by Section 61 and 62 of the Constitution.
