Newsday journalists to appear in court tomorrow

The editor of Newsday Wisdom Mudzungairi and senior reporter Richard Chidza are expected to appear in court on 4 March 2017 on charges of insulting or undermining the president in terms of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act following publication of a story pertaining to President Robert Mugabe’s health.

Mudzungairi and Chidza were released on the same day on 3 March 2017 after being questioned and charged for the alleged offence by officers from the police Law and Order Section in Harare.

Background

The story titled, Mugabe in fresh health scare … sneaks out to Singapore, was published in the newspaper’s edition of 2 March 2017. This followed President Mugabe’s departure for Singapore on 1 March 2017.

Presidential spokesperson, George Charamba, is on record confirming the president’s trip to Singapore for a “scheduled” medical review.
